Maggi: Germany’s Secret Cooking Weapon

Getting to Know Maggi

If you want to cook really authentic German dishes, then you need to have a bottle of Maggi on-hand.

Maggi Würze is used in almost everything, and it gives recipes that German kick.  It’s like cinammon or brown sugar or butter for most of us.  I mean, it is THE German seasoning.

If you’re in Germany, you can buy it at just about any grocery store (except Aldi, for some reason).  It’s usually mixed in with the Maggi and Knorr sauce and soup packets.  Sometimes it’s on the baking aisle.

If you’re in the States, you can order it on Amazon.  Just make sure that the bottle says “Würze.”  I was reading through German language forums from German expats living in the States, and they all said that the bottle that reads “Seasoning” is absolutely not the same.  Unfortunately, the real stuff isn’t cheap.

You could try the grocery stores.  Some Germans said that they were able to find it in the International, Ethnic, or, even sometimes, Mexican section.

There doesn’t seem to be a specific way to cook with Maggi.  What I mean by that is that I have never once seen a German measure it out.  They just shake it four or five times into whatever they’re cooking.

So, how do they use it?

  • In most sauces (especially Spaghetti Bolognese)
  • In most soups (especially noodle soup, chicken soup, and pea soup)
  • Drizzled over scrambled eggs
  • As a salad dressing
  • On Frikadelle
  • In homemade spinach
  • On schnitzel

My husband even adds it into my American recipes.  In fact, there’s not really anything he doesn’t put Maggi in.

Case in point: We recently made homemade chili.  My husband loves to cook, and he’s much better at it than I am.  So, I walked him through how to make it (Texas style), and then kind of left him to it.

Me: Hey, the chili came out really good.  But something about it tastes different.

Husband: I put Maggi in it.

Take this exchange and substitute chili with macaroni and cheese, chicken noodle soup, sloppy joes, queso – all things my husband has actually put Maggi in.

So, if you want to Germanize your recipes, or if you’ve been trying to make authentic German recipes, but they always come out a tad wrong – add Maggi.
