Theater Performances in English

The Fall of the House of Usher (Koblenz, May 3)

Details:  “Roderick Usher asks his friend William to visit his property. It is located in a ghostly environment on a gloomy lake and is surrounded by an aura of family pastures of a degenerate nobility. William meets with the youngest descendants of the family, who obviously suffer from a mental illness and greatly exasperated nerves. The house also houses Roderick’s sister, Lady Madeline, who is also in medical treatment. Encountered by nightmares, William witnesses uncanny events between reality and delusions that culminate in Madeline’s mysterious death. Roderick and William bury them in the underground vault of the house. Even before William can free himself and his friend from the horror, Madeline, who is streaming with blood, appears to them.

The music of Philip Glass, one of the most important representatives of the so-called Minimal Music, supports the striking action with a floating, absorbing sound carpet, which places the listener in a kind of meditative movement. The seeming eventlessness in the music, in connection with the action and the nightmare atmosphere of this show, is based on the eponymous tale of Edgar Allan Poe.”
